WebbThe poem begins with the speaker to give a stream of consciousness depiction of an island and what it is like to wake up there. Everything is calm, the birds and waves are the only sounds one can hear. There are men pushing out their boats to fish, and the sun is defiant in its entry into the sky. WebbThen along comes Walt Whitman who (so I gather) sort of introduced a new way of writing poetry. And then contemporary poetry doesn't seem to have any defined structure, but more of sentences that are broken into lines in seemingly random places or by feel; it seems like rhythm and meter has drifted away a bit for contemporary poetry.
